Alma Resort Cam Ranh unites Cam Ranh hotels and resorts to End Plastic Soup in Vietnam

Hotels and resorts in Cam Ranh, Southern Vietnam are working together to tackle the growing issue of plastic pollution in the country, and eventually establish a local plant that will upcycle all kinds of plastic waste through the End Plastic Soup in Vietnam campaign.

The End Plastic Soup campaign is spearheaded by Alma Resort Cam Ranh, The Anam Cam Ranh, and Ana Mandara Cam Ranh, and Melia Vinpearl Cam Ranh and is supported by 10 other resorts in the Long Beach stretch, local schools, and Rotary Club Saigon.

Beach clean-up with 300 volunteers

On 17-18 June, a weekend beach clean-up attracted around 300 volunteers from the Vietnam and Cambodia Rotary Clubs, local schools, and participating hotels. Roughly 1.5 tons of plastic was collected from the 15km Long Beach to be upcycled. Prior to the clean-up day, a welcome gala dinner was organized at Alma Resort on 17 June to welcome participants and officially launch the initiative.

Another beach clean-up was organized on 19 October at the shores of Bai Dai beach, participated in by around 200 volunteers from the Alma Resort, The Anam Cam Ranh, Ana Mandara Cam Ranh, and Melia Vinpearl Cam Ranh Resort.

Plant for upcycling plastic

Our managing director, Herbert Laubichler-Pichler said the hotels and resorts within the Cam Ranh area would work together with Rotary Club Saigon International, to continue supporting Rotary-initiative End Plastic Soup to establish a plant to upcycle all types of plastics.

“Alma and the local hospitality industry know it is crucial to do our bit to raise awareness about the damage plastic is doing to our stunning oceans, direct harmful plastics to upcycling efforts, and fundraise to help contribute to establish a plant here in Cam Ranh that will help the environment and the local community,” Laubichler-Pichler said.

The plant will also welcome schools and groups for educational tours and symposiums on responsible green practices.

Ending Plastic Soup in Vietnam

Vietnam has become a significant contributor to global plastic waste, with 3.1 million tons of plastic waste dumped on land and 0.28 to 0.73 million tons dumped into the ocean each year, according to the World Bank.

The “End Plastic Soup in Cam Ranh” campaign is part of the global environmental initiative called End Plastic Soup, which is backed by numerous Rotarians worldwide. The campaign aims to eliminate plastic waste in oceans and seas and prevent its presence in lakes, rivers, forests, parks, and streets by 2050.

Rotary Club Saigon International, a community-based organization affiliated with Rotary International, is actively involved in this campaign. Rotary International is one of the largest service organizations globally, dedicated to serving others, promoting integrity, and fostering understanding, goodwill, and peace among business, professional, and community leaders.
